How to care for your new smile after orthodontics

Finishing braces or Invisalign is an exciting milestone! You finally get to enjoy the straight, confident smile you’ve been waiting for. But keeping those results looking fabulous takes a little daily care and attention.
Wear your retainer as directed
The most important part of dental aftercare after orthodontics is your retainer. Teeth naturally want to shift back to their old positions. Wearing your retainer as instructed keeps your new smile stable and long-lasting.
- Removable retainers (Invisalign-style): Clean daily with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser. Never use hot water, which can warp the material.
- Fixed retainers: Pay extra attention when brushing and flossing around the wire to prevent plaque build-up.
Maintain excellent oral hygiene
Straight teeth are easier to keep clean, but daily care is still key.
- Brush at least twice a day with a soft-bristle toothbrush.
- Floss carefully to keep gums healthy.
- Consider using a water flosser for easier cleaning around retainers.
Keep up with regular dental visits
Routine cleanings and check-ups ensure your results stay on track. Your dentist can check your bite, retainer fit, and overall gum health. If you notice shifting or discomfort, book an appointment right away.
Watch what you eat and drink
Your new smile deserves protection:
- Avoid hard, sticky foods that could damage retainers.
- Limit sugary drinks and snacks to reduce risk of decay.
- Rinse with water after coffee, tea, or wine to prevent stains.
Protect your smile during sports
If you play contact sports, use a custom mouthguard to protect your teeth and retainers. It’s a simple step that saves you from chips, cracks, or movement.
